TABS Information Technology

The MSIT program prepares professionals for careers that require the integration of information systems knowledge with a strong understanding of the global business environment. Graduates often start to work as consultants, risk analysts, business analysts, systems analysts, project managers, or systems architects and advance quickly in technical and managerial careers. The program equips its graduates to work in and/or lead teams that analyze, architect, integrate and implement IT-based business solutions in an increasingly diverse, globally interdependent, and technically complex environment.

The MSIT program aims to instill:

  • A working knowledge of the theory and current practices in distributed systems, communications networks, object-oriented analysis and development, and database technologies used in implementing state-of-the-art business solutions;
  • A thorough understanding of IS development processes at the individual, team and project levels to execute distributed IT development projects effectively;
  • Among the students a spirit of cooperation, ethical behavior and acceptance of social and professional responsibility as members of the IT profession;
  • An understanding of the cultural and international perspective of information technology that enables the graduates to operate effectively in a global IT sourcing environment.

The U.S. News & World Report "America's Best Graduate Schools 2012" ranked the MSIT program #18 nationally and #3 in New England. The program emphasizes current technical knowledge of the IS field which is being shaped by IT-enabled business processes, web technologies, distributed architectures, new infrastructure standards, and advances in mobile computing.

Students develop expertise in designing, deploying and managing the technology solutions that drive global, highly connected, real-time businesses. They use Java, JSP and J2EE for software development; UML for object-oriented modeling; Oracle and SQL for database management; Microsoft Project for IT project management; and networking labs and simulations. Through elective courses, MSIT students can tap other leading-edge resources in the Hughey Center for Financial Services, Design and Usability Center, and Center for Marketing Technology.
